Soares Flies Into Quarterfinals At Texas Regional

Texas Tech junior Felipe Soares advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas Tech junior Felipe Soares had momentum on his side at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, as he picked up a pair of singles wins to march on to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Soares, who is seeded sixth and ranked No. 35 nationally, rolled past Sebastian Erimicion of UT Arlington, 7-5, 7-6. He followed the win with a come-from-behind win over ninth-seeded and No. 87 Arturs Kazijevs of SMU, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The win launched Soares into the quarterfinals of the event, becoming the first Red Raider since Gonzalo Escobar to reach the quarters. Escobar went on to win the event in 2010 and 2011. Soares, who is 4-1 on the season, will now face 11th-seeded and No. 112 Antonio Lupieri of Baylor on Monday at 9 a.m.
Belgium native Jolan Cailleau also stayed alive on Sunday, as the sophomore rebounded from his Round of 64 loss on Saturday. Cailleau added a pair of wins on Sunday to improve to 3-1 at the event and earn a spot in the Consolation 64 Quarterfinals.
Callieau dropped Incarnate Word's Josip Smoljan, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) and followed that up with a state set win over Texas A&M's Jett Cash, 6-2, 6-1, to punch his ticket to the final eight players in the bracket.
Cailleau, who is now 4-2 on the season, will face UT Arlington's Jonathan Gonzalez on Monday at 9 a.m.
