TULSA, Okla. - The Texas Tech tandem of Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares advanced to the third round of qualifying on Tuesday, at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
Dojas and Soares, who are seeded eighth in the qualifying, are ranked 35th nationally by the ITA.
The Brazilian duo put together a pair of hard-fought doubles victories on Saturday.
Dojas and Soares battled back in the first match of the day, as the Texas Tech dropped the first set to Middle Tennessee State's Ben Davis and Ettore Zito, 6-4. Dojas and Soares regrouped in the second and used an early break and cruised to a 6-1 win to send it to a third set super tiebreaker.
The two teams traded points, before Texas Tech pulled away and closed out to a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) win over Middle Tennessee to advance to the second round.
In the second round, Dojas and Soares took on Tulsa's combo of Carlos Bautista and Matthew Kirby. It was deja vu, as Tulsa took the first set, 6-4.
But the reslient Dojas and Soares bounced back to take the second set, 6-4, setting up a dramatic finish. The super tiebreaker was back and forth until the Red Raider tandem served for the match, securing a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
The Red Raiders are now one win away from securing a spot in the main draw of the event. Dojas and Soares are set to face South Florida's Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts at 2 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
In singles, Dojas entered the event seeded No. 15, but Columbia's Ashok Narayana upset the Red Raider junior in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, ending his singles stayin the "Oil Capital of the World."
A win tomorrow for Dojas and Soares in doubles would catapult the tandem into the main draw Round of 32.
Soares is also waiting to get things going in singles, as the Tech junior, who is ranked No. 43, has already punched a ticket to the main draw in singles.
