PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Lynn Kiro's run ended late Tuesday night, as the Texas Tech sopohmore lost to Clemson's Romy Kölzer in the second round of qualifying at the Riviera/All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Kiro, who is ranked No. 83, lost to third seeded and No. 23 Kölzer, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
The loss came on the heels of Kiro's 20th consecutive victory in the morning. In the first round of qualifying, Kiro upset LSU's No. 61 Joana Vale Costa in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
The winning improved Kiro's season record to 4-0. Combined with 16 straight wins to close out the 2013-14 season, Kiro's streak reach a school-record 20 straight.
Kiro, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, was looking to become the first Lady Raider to reach the main draw at the Al-American. After going 3-0 in prequalifying, Kiro became the first Lady Raider in the 32-year history of the event to win a match in qualifying portion of the event.
Ironically, teammate Kenna Kilgo, who is ranked No. 113, earned a lucky loser ticket to qualifying, but a back injury forced her to withdraw.
In doubles, Kilgo and Kiro lost in a marathon battle to BYU's Mayci Jones and Toby Miclat, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (16-14) in the qualifying Round of 32.
The Lady Raiders will return to action this weekend, when Texas Tech travels to Lafayette, Ind., to participate in the Purdue Invitational. The field includes student-athletes from Michigan, Louisville, Memphis, Miami (Ohio) and host Purdue.
