MIDLAND, Texas - No. 22 Texas Tech opened the 2012-13 women's tennis season right where it left off - winning convincingly.
Rashmi Teltumbde and Sandra Dynka paced the Lady Raiders to nine wins in 10 matches on the first day of the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Friday at the Midland Racquet Club.
"We played outstanding today," said assistant coach Todd Chapman. "It was a great start to the season. You really could not have asked for any better effort. I am very impressed with them all. It speaks volumes to the amount of work that they have put in heading into the season."
Teltumbde and Dynka each dispatched a pair of opponents in singles play to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Teltumbde, who is ranked No. 105 nationally and seeded second in the event, dumped Brook Dennis of UTA, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round and survived Rice's Dominique Harmath, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6. Dynka cruised by Texas State's Melissa Hadad, 6-2, 6-2 and tripped TCU's Mokia Sirilova, 6-1, 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Freshman Kelli Hine defeated Abilene Christian's Britney Reed, 7-5, 6-2 in the first round and then upset sixth-seeded Janine Weinreich, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.
Freshman Sofya Malysheva was not as lucky in her collegiate debut, as she fell 6-4, 6-1 to Kim Anicete of Rice in the second round, but rebound to defeat Nebraska's Isabella Zegerska, 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, both tandems advanced to the second round.
Texas Tech returns to action on Saturday at 9 a.m.
