LONDON - Former Lady Raider Sally Kipyego finished third in her heat in the women's 5,000-meter run and Michael Mathieu finished third his heat of the men's 200-meter dash Tuesday morning as both advanced at the 2012 London Olympics.
Kipyego crossed the line with a time of 15:01.87 to secure her spot in Friday's final scheduled for 2:05 p.m. (CT). She will be now be seeking her second medal of the 2012 Olympic Games after earning silver in the 10,000-meter run last week.
Mathieu meanwhile finished the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.62 and will compete in the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday at 2:10 p.m.
Former Red Raider Shane Brathwaite also competed Tuesday morning but faltered in the men's 110-meter hurdles after missing on the opening hurdle and did not finish the race.
Tuesday marked Mathieu's second appearance at the Olympic Games as he earned a silver medal in 2008 as a member of the Bahamian 4x400 relay team alongside former Red Raider Andrae Williams.
Mathieu was a three-time All-American during his Red Raider career which spanned from 2005-06.
Brathwaite entered the Olympics fresh off of his senior campaign at Texas Tech this spring in which he earned first team All-American honors at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. There, he finished seventh overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.93.
Brathwaite recorded a personal-best time of 13.31 shortly after ending his senior campaign at Tech at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Under-23 Championships where he captured gold.
