LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman Meghan Stacy became the fourth Red Raider to earn a Big 12 weekly award Monday as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week.
Stacy totaled 19 kills in Tech's only match last week, a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Saturday evening. The performance marked Stacy's second-straight solid outing as she matched her career high in kills that was set just a week before at No. 14 Kansas State.
The Ozark, Mo. native recorded just five attacking errors off 40 swings against the Mountaineers en route to finishing with a .350 hitting percentage, her highest in Big 12 play this season. It was also her third-highest average this season as well.
She also added five digs and a block for the Red Raiders, who defeated West Virginia in four sets for the second time this season. Tech had not previously swept the season series with a Big 12 opponent since defeating both Kansas and Texas A&M twice in 2006.
Stacy is the third Red Raider to earn Rookie of the Week honors this season, joining Emily Ehrle (Sept. 10) and Emily Ruetter (Sept. 4). The selection marks Tech's fifth weekly award this year, the most in a program history, as Rachel Brummitt also garnered Defensive Player of the Week accolades twice already.
Tech has now picked up eight Big 12 weekly accolades under second-year head coach Don Flora, a vast improvement over the previous 15 seasons when the program was honored just 12 times by the conference.
The Red Raiders are back in action Wednesday evening when Tech travels to face Oklahoma in a 7 p.m. first serve at McCasland Field House in Norman.
