The Texas Tech soccer team, led by senior Madison Terry's two goals and senior Taylor Lytle's two assists, beat Arizona State, 5-0, in the opening game of the 2011 Cats Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
"In the first half, we settled in after about 10 minutes and into a real good passing rhythm," head coach Tom Stone said after the match." Once we started taking care of the ball the game started tilting in our favor."
After a quiet first half the Red Raiders (5-3) wasted little time getting on the board. In the 47th minute, Taylor Lytle crossed the ball into the box where it found Madison Terry for her first goal of the season. It is Lytle's first assist of the season and 25th of her career.
"As we've seen this season, we can be all over opponents but leave some goals on the table that we should have scored," Stone said. "As we have been telling the girls it would - the lid finally came off the goal and once we got the first one, it was like we were running downhill."
Jessica Fuston, Tech's leading goal scorer from a year ago, found the net in the 61st on a pass from Terry. Fuston scored on a wide open net to put Tech up 2-0. Fuston had been held scoreless in her last seven matches.
The third goal was setup by Lytle again. Lytle drew the goalkeeper out of the box and found a wide open Terry for her second goal of the night. With two assists, Lytle moved into a tie with Kristy Frantz for most assists in a career with 26.
"Lylte was all over the Sun Devils tonight - relentless in running at the back four and her two assists were pure class," Stone said. "Her ability to make the right decision in the final third is amongst the best in college soccer."
Terry is now No. 2 on points in a single match with five and her two second half goals ties her for the most in a single match. Melanie Brosnahan (2000) and Frantz (1996) both accomplished it during their careers.
"We could not be happier for Madison," Stone said. "She had terrific energy tonight when we put her in up top and Coach Gordon suggested we slide her in at attacking mid - then Madison did the rest. It was terrific touch on the game winner and perfect choice and composure on her second one."
Freshman Paige Strahan joined the goal scoring party in the 79th minute with a header over the goalkeeper on a pass from fellow freshman Jaelene Hinkle. It is Strahan's first goal of her career.
"Hinkle was special again tonight down the left flank," Stone said. "The ball she whipped into the back post was there to be had and Paige (Strahan) just out worked her defender to the spot and headed it home."
The four assists in the second half ties a school record set in 1995 against Stephen F. Austin.
The Red Raiders final goal came from Tiffini Smith. The sophomore's second goal of the season came on a shot that sailed over the keepers head in the 84th minute.
The five goals in the second half, ties a school record. It previously happened against Prairie View A&M in 2006 and South Alabama in 1996.
Tech not only tied two school records but also broke one against Arizona State. The Red Raiders 14 points in the second half broke the previous record of 12 points.
Tech will now play the host Arizona on Sunday, Sept. 18 in the final match of the Cats Classic. First kick is scheduled for 6 p.m. MST.
