LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team collected its sixth shutout of the season, as the Red Raiders battled Arizona to a 0-0 tie in the final match of Cats Classic held at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
"You know the girls are really disappointed tonight because of the chances we had to win only to emerge with a tie but I have to give them credit for a successful weekend," head coach Tom Stone said. "We won the tournament, scored 5 goals and posted two shutouts. The defense gave up very few looks all weekend. Sundays are gut check games many times and Arizona was a desperate team fighting for every inch of their home field--the battle for loose balls was as intense as we've seen. "
The Red Raiders (5-3-1) outshot Arizona (0-7-1) by a margin of 16-11 including 6-1 in the first overtime period.
Taylor Lytle led the team with six shot attempts followed by Haley Haagsma's four.
"Lytle was easily the best attacker in the tournament," Stone said. "Her runs off the ball and at goal were dynamic even though at times she drew two and three defenders. Taylor has really developed into a 90 min player and she does it with a relentless work rate that wears defenders down."
Freshmen Jaelene Hinkle, Bridgett Jenkins and Taylor Narvaiz all logged 110 minutes to help solidify the defense.
Victoria Esson made six saves on the night playing the entire match. Esson was named one of the Defensive MVP's for not allowing a goal during the Cats Classic.
It is the first scoreless tie for the Red Raiders since October 8th of last season against Texas in Austin.
Lytle and Tiffini Smith were named to the Cats Classic All-Tournament Team.
