Red Raider Golf Finishes In Top Six At Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Matt Smith turned in his best performance of the tournament as he led the Texas Tech men's golf team to a sixth place finish Sunday afternoon in the final round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
Smith claimed the Red Raiders' first top-10 finish of the season as he recorded a three-under 69 in the finale of the Classic Sunday to finish the tournament two-under par with a total of 214. The team-best 69 score elevated the senior nine spots up the leaderboard to put him in a tie with J.T. Griffin of Georgia Tech for ninth place in the individual standings.
Tech jumped three spots in the team standings following the third day of action as head coach Greg Sands saw senior Nils Floren turn in his third consecutive even-par 72 as he ended the tournament tied for 12th place. Will Griffin turned in a three-over 75 as he finished tied for 27th place while senior Sergio Franky and redshirt freshman Chandler Rusk recorded a pair of 76s to round out the Red Raider scoring.
Alabama came back from its one-stroke deficit following the second round to claim the top spot on Sunday afternoon. Clemson, who sat in first place following day two, fell down the leader board following the final round as the Tigers finished tied for third with Georgia Tech while Wake Forest came from behind to finish in the silver slot.
Wake Forest's Lee Bedford finished the tournament 10-under par to claim the top individual honors while teammate Evan Beck came in second by two strokes and Auburn's Blayne Barber finished in third place at six-under par.
