LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Kelsy Garland and incoming freshman Samantha Adams claimed the 2010 ITA Summer Circuit doubles title held July 9-12 in Abilene, Texas, hosted by McMurry University and Abilene Christian University.
The ITA, the governing body of college tennis, has had over 23,000 men and women compete in ITA Summer Circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit provides college (and junior and alumni) players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. Although the primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshman and collegiate players the chance to compete in the summer months, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; therefore, anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.
The Lady Raider duo opened as the No. 1 seed and stayed strong through all their matches to claim the title by defeating their last opponent 8-4 to earn the top doubles spot in Southwest event.
In singles play, Samantha edged Kelsy 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals before falling to Charlotte Calhoun in the finals, 7-6, 3-6, 10-6.
Samantha is a 5-star recruit according to the latest TennisRecruiting.net information. The New Braunfels High School graduate is currently ranked fourth in Texas and is listed 45th in the current national rankings.
Kelsy, an Early Childhood Education major, earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors for the second straight year. She will be the only senior player on the Texas Tech squad this season.
The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of eight regional circuits (East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Southwest and West) and seven of the eight regions consist of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the August 7-11 ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana.
