LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Accounting major Leah Legler and sophomore Sociology major Holley Gentsch earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 softball honors. Legler, who was named to the first team, now advances to the national ballot.
"I could not be happier for these two outstanding student-athletes," head coach Shanon Hays said of the honor. "Both of these young ladies work hard at everything they do and it's just so gratifying that their efforts are recognized like this. This is a great honor and we're very proud that they represent us," he added.
Legler, who earlier this week was honored with a TECHspy award as co-winner of the Jeannine McHaney Scholar-Athlete award (with Megan Hoffert from soccer) and was one of two high-graduating seniors for softball with teammate Danielle Matthews, also earned Academic All District 6 honors during her sophomore season but did not advance to the national ballot in 2008.
Legler is the Red Raiders starting shortstop and would be the first softball player to earn the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honor since Paula Workman was named to the squad in 1999 should she receive enough votes in the national ballot. An Honors College student, she has been named to the President's List every semester since her arrival on campus in 2007.
For Gentsch, the Red Raiders catcher, the second-team ballot is her first such honor as freshmen are not eligible to be nominated. She is a pre-law student who has earned President's List honors each semester at Tech.
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America programs and honors are administered and voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors).
