OKLAHOMA CITY - The No. 7 seed at the final Big 12 Softball Championships, Texas Tech (35-15) anxiously awaits the opportunity to face No. 10 Kansas (21-34) but rain threatens the event.
"Obviously, we want to get games in, especially since our team has had almost two weeks off during finals and since our last regular-season games, but with this current weather and the forecast for the weekend, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the event is washed out," head coach Shanon Hays said.
Tonight's schedule at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium begins at 5 p.m when two fields at the complex are utilized while Baylor and Iowa State and Tech and Kansas are set to begin the event. Following those games, the conference holds its annual awards ceremony celebrating both the athletic and academic All-Big 12 squads. The single elimination event then continues tomorrow with winners of the first two games meeting up with the remaining six seeds. A championship game, set for Sunday at noon, is scheduled to air on Fox Sports.
No. 12 Texas drew the No. 1 seed by winning the regular-season schedule and would emerge as the Big 12's automatic berth into the postseason should the tournament be rained out.
The NCAA will announce its 64-team bracket live on ESPNU at 9 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, May 16. The Red Raiders are currently the sixth-best Big 12 team in terms of RPI (ratings power index) with 43 as its listing as released by the NCAA earlier this week and hope to get into the tournament on the strength of its 35-15 overall record and winning games of key opponents, including beating six top-25 opponents.
Note: All games on the main field at ASA Hall of Fame stadium will feature free live video streaming from the Big 12 Web site (along with live stats features). Fans may access the feeds from the TTU Softball schedule page on this Web site.
