LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (11-11, 5-6 Big 12) won the doubles point and three singles matches to claim a 4-1 win over Missouri in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
The Tigers opened play with a win at No. 1 doubles as Mallory Weber and Kaitlyn Ritchie stopped Kelsy Garland and Natalie Leitch, 8-3. The Lady Raiders stormed back to win the doubles point. Sandra Dynka and Elizabeth Ullathorne defeated Kristen Bleakley and Andrea Lewis at the second spot, 8-5. Stefanie Peana and Caroline Starck downed Sofia Ayala and Jamie Mera at No. 3 doubles to give Texas Tech the lead, 1-0.
In the first completed singles match, junior Kelsy Garland defeated Maria Christensen at No. 3 singles in two sets, 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Caroline Starck followed with another two-set at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
Missouri on the scoreboard when Kaitlin Ritchie stopped Sandra Dynka at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Just as the top singles match concluded, Elizabeth Ullathorne gave Texas Tech the 4-1 win as she defeated Jamie Mera at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
The other two matches in play were suspended when the Lady Raiders held a 4-1 lead. Natalie Leitch won her first set 7-6 at No. 2 singles and held a 2-0 lead in the second set when her match was stopped. Lorena Aviles also won her first set at No. 6 singles, 6-4, and was leading 5-1 in the second set when play was halted.
Texas Tech now advances to Friday's quarterfinals, where they will take on third-seeded Nebraska at 6 p.m.
