Haley Fournier and Nikki Sanders Advance at UNM Invitational

LUBBOCk, TX - Texas Tech women's tennis freshmen Haley Fournier, Nikki Sanders, and Samantha Adams each advanced in their singles matches on Saturday.
At the University of New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, Haley Fournier defeated Nikolina Grabac in Flight B semifinals, 6-2, 6-2. Fournier advances to finals of Flight B on Sunday morning. Also in the finals is Nikki Sanders. She defeated Northern Arizona's Aimee Oki in their Flight C semifinal match on Saturday afternoon, 6-0, 6-0. The Flight B and Flight C finals begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
Playing in Flight A, Caroline Starck lost her match to Wyoming's No. 1 seed Veronica Popovici, 6-0, 6-2. Elizabeth Ullathorne also lost her Flight A singles match to Arizona's Sarah Landsman, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. Landsman is listed No. 75 in the most recent ITA national rankings. Lindsey Tristan won her non-tournament singles match over Northern Arizona's Alice Walker, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Nikki Sanders and Caroline Starck dropped their Flight 1 semifinals match to Kim van Ginkel and Carly van Hollen of Wyoming, 8-5. In Flight 2 doubles, Haley Fournier and Elizabeth won their semifinal match over New Mexico's Amy Shipperd and Michaela Oldani to advance to the finals, 8-2. In Flight 2 finals, Haley and Elizabeth lost to Boise State's Morgan Basil and Sonia Klanczynska, 8-6.
At the HEB Baylor Invitational in Waco, Samantha Adams won both singles matches on Saturday and advanced to the Sunday's semifinals against Karolina Filipiak of Baylor. In the Round of 16, Samantha defeated UNT's No. 7 seed, Irina Paraschiv, 7-5, 6-2. Adams then downed No.2 seed Alexandra Anghelescu of Georgia in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-5, to earn a spot in the semifinals. Lorena Aviles was unable to advance after dropping her Round of 16 singles match to Georgia's Maho Kowase, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
In doubles play, Kelsy Garland and Samantha Adams fell to UNT's Irina Paraschiv and Barbora Vykydalova, 8-5.
These two invitational tournaments complete the fall campaign for the women's tennis squad. Non-conference play begins on January 29 with the team taking on Wichita State in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
