LUBBOCK, Texas - After a successful junior season that rewrote the Texas Tech record book, Amanda Dowdy became the first Red Raider named to the All-Big 12 first team since 2002 on Monday as part of the conference's postseason awards.
A Lexington, Texas native, Dowdy proved to be one of the Big 12's elite players throughout the year, finishing with a team-high 424 kills to go along with 243 digs. Her 4.12 kills per set average ranked second in the conference, while her 4.55 points per set finished fourth overall.
The postseason accolade is the second of Dowdy's career as she was named to the Big 12 All-Freshmen team in 2008.
"I couldn't be happier for Amanda," Tech interim head coach Beth Falls said. "She had one of the best seasons in school history, and her selection by the Big 12 coaches is very rewarding. Amanda was one of our leaders on the court each and every day, and I think the best is still to come for her."
Dowdy's 424 kills ranks 10th on the school's single-season chart while her 1,286 attempts finished sixth all-time. She will enter the 2011 season chasing several career categories as her 1,041 kills ranks fifth overall, only five shy of Christine Martin for fourth, and her 2,892 attempts is currently sixth. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills during a career.
With 37 kills against Colorado on Oct. 13, Dowdy broke the school record for most kills in a match, passing Kelly Johnson's 34 against Kansas State in 2002. She also added a career-high 20 digs against the Buffaloes in one of her 10 double-doubles during the year.
Dowdy added another 30-plus kill match against the Buffaloes later in the season, smashing 34 to help lead Tech to a 3-2 victory in Boulder, its first conference road win since 2006. Only two other Big 12 players notched 30-kill matches during the season with Dowdy's 37 kills ending as the conference high.
Johnson was Tech's last player named to the All-Big 12 first team in 2002. She was an honorable mention selection the following two seasons. Dowdy is Tech's seventh player to earn a first team selection in school history.
