LUBBOCK, Texas - Amanda Dowdy recorded her ninth career double-double, but Oklahoma took advantage of 29 attacking errors by Texas Tech en route to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 28-26) victory Saturday afternoon at the United Spirit Arena.
With Tech struggling to find the court early, it got a needed boost from its defense as the Red Raiders had 17 blocks in the match, while Dowdy and libero Jackie Vincent both recorded double-digit digs. Dowdy, who added a match-high 13 kills, had 11 digs with Vincent adding 17 of her own, which tied for the match high with Oklahoma's Caitlin Higgins.
After two rough sets to open the match, Tech came to life in the third, overcoming an early deficit to eventually tie the match at 23 points each. The Red Raiders forced three set points, but the Sooners found the equalizer each time before capitalizing on their own match point to end Tech's chances to force a fourth set.
Sheridan Burgess and Barbara Conceicao provided Tech with a needed boost during the final set as the duo was inserted into the rotation and immediately responded with Conceicao nailing four kills in the frame and Burgess adding two late kills. Conceicao also added three block assists in the set.
Justine Young added to the Tech offensive attack as the junior, who was making her second-straight start, finished with 10 kills, one shy of her season high. Setter Karlyn Meyers kept the offense going with 33 assists.
The Red Raiders ended the match with a .083 hitting percentage compared to OU's .214 percentage. Tech had difficulty hitting around the Sooner block as OU finished with 25 blocks with nine coming from Sarah Freudenrich. Suzy Boulavsky led the OU offense with 12 kills.
Tech was wearing specially-made pink uniforms by Under Armour in support of breast cancer awareness as part of the program's "Dig for the Cure" promotion. All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Susan G. Koman Foundation.
The Red Raiders continue the second round of Big 12 play this Wednesday against in-state rival Texas A&M. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.
