Texas Tech Golf Bounces Back on Day Two

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech fired a second round 284 Saturday, 18 strokes better than Friday's opening round, to move into a tie for seventh at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club (7,012 yards / par 72) in Rocky Face, Ga. Three Red Raiders turned in cards of par or better to lead Tech.
Junior Nils Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden) carded four birdies en route to a 3-under 69 and sits alone in seventh place. Senior Chris Ward (McKinney, Texas) and junior Matt Smith (Canberra, Australia) fired rounds of 68 and 72, respectively, as the Red Raiders matched tournament-leader Chattanooga for the day's low round of 284. Ward played a bogey-free round with four birdies, while Smith put five birdies on the card to counter two double-bogeys and a bogey.
Sophomore Brian Scherer (Midland, Texas) is tied in 47th place, following a 3-over 75 and sophomore Tyler Weworski (Carlsbad, Calif.) is in 58th place following an 82.
The No. 27-ranked Red Raiders entered Saturday's round in 11th place in the 12-team field, after opening with a 14-over 302 Friday. Chattanooga is 1-under for the tournament and lead Tennessee (+1) in second place by two strokes. South Carolina (+7) and Alabama (+7) are tied in third, while Wake Forest (+9) and Georgia Tech (+9) are tied in fifth. Tech (+9), Auburn (+9) and Georgia (+9) are each tied in seventh place, while East Tennessee State (+17), Clemson (+19) and Mississippi (+23) round out the standings.
The third and final round gets underway at 7 a.m. CT Sunday with Texas Tech, Georgia and Auburn teeing off at 7:50 a.m. Live scoring for the final round will be available at www.golfstat.com.
