LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Gil Roberts is headed to Berlin, Germany for the biggest meet of his young career as he will be competing in the IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships on August 15-23.
"It's a tremendous honor for our program and an honor for Gil to represent himself and America. Having our second American to make a national team, after Jonathan Johnson's, is great," head coach Wes Kittley said. "He also has the opportunity to run on the 4x400M relay team that has been unprecedented with the number of times they have won is great experience."
The three-time All-American earned a spot on Team USA by finishing second at the USA National Trials by placing second in the 400M. He will compete in not only the 400M but also is a member of the relay pool for the 4x400M. The United States has won seven of the last eight IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships 4x400M relay and men's 400M titles.
"The neat thing about making a world championship team is he will be able to run against the best in the world and be able to go rounds," Kittley said. "It gives him valuable experience where he is able to pace himself and learn how to go through rounds."
Roberts will have 4x400M relay practice on Aug. 10-11 and than the first round of the 400M is Tues., Aug. 18.
