LUBBOCK, Texas - In the first true sign that there is a new era in softball at Texas Tech, a glimpse of the schedule in progress for the 2010 Red Raider softball team reveals four tournaments hosted by Tech, along with four doubleheader midweek dates to comprise the majority of the non-conference portion of its schedule.
"I give a ton of credit to Coach Wilson for helping to conceive the facility changes in the first place. The rest of the credit is to our administration who knew we had to get things done that so that we could plan 18 dates where we can play in Lubbock, hosting other teams in tournament events or doubleheaders," new Head Coach Shanon Hays said. "Due in large part to those efforts, we will be able to bring in teams for three-way round robins and are able to accommodate them because of the fantastic locker rooms, hitting cages, warmup areas and, hopefully, warm enough winter weather."
In prior years, while the facility was being upgraded, not only to the playing surface itself but to the amenities which surround the field, team areas simply would not have allowed for tournament play. This forced the Red Raiders to travel to parts of the country where tournaments are typically held in February and March.
"A trip to Arizona is not a difficult one for our student-athletes, and so we will remain in the Arizona State opening-weekend tournament which features more than 20 teams from around the country. And, we'll be a part of the USF tournament in Tampa over our spring break week. But, our only other away event out of conference is a quick trip to Arlington," Hays added.
The schedule, which is currently listed as pending and will not be updated or officially posted to this Web site until later in the fall, is slated as follows:
Feb. 11- 14 at ASU Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Feb. 19-21 hosting Maine and UMKC in Lubbock

March 19-21 at USF Under Armour Showcase in Tampa Bay, Fla.
