LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Chris Ward fired a 3-over 75 in the opening round of the Sahalee Players Championship and sits eight shots off of the lead of one of the country's top amateur events. Ward is among 66 golfers competing at the Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
Ward, who is tied in 39th place, opened the round with a double bogey and finished the front nine at 2-over. On the back, consecutive bogeys on 14 and 15 dropped him to 4-over, but a birdie on the par-5 18th salvaged his 3-over for the afternoon. Ward was one of the top scorers for the Red Raiders during his junior season, averaging 73.8 strokes per round. He also picked up his first collegiate win at the UTSA Invitational in February.
Some of the nation's top amateur golfers are competing in this week's event, including several from the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma State's Trent Whitekiller, the event's defending champion, is tied in 14th place.
The 54-hole event continues Thursday with Ward teeing off at 10:20 a.m. CT.
