AUSTIN, Texas - Behind impressive first-set play by freshman Miara Cave and sophomore Amanda Dowdy, Texas Tech shocked No. 2 Texas, but the small victory was not parlayed into overall success as the Longhorns beat Texas Tech, 3-1, in Big 12 volleyball action. With the win Texas improves to 20-1, 15-1 on the year, while the Red Raiders fall to 2-22, 0-15. Texas Tech is the only squad to take a set off the Longhorns in Austin in 2009, thus far.
Cave, who went on to lead Tech's offense with 12 kills, committed only four errors on the night and finished with a .320 hitting efficiency performance. Dowdy added eight kills and had four digs. Junior Barbara Conceicao (eight kills) led Tech's effort at the net and finished with four blocks, including three solo. Setter Karlyn Meyers collected 34 assists and scooped up six digs to lead the defense.
UT's Destinee Hooker led all players with 17 kills and five blocks.
For Tech, it may be hard to overstate the importance winning a set from one of the nation's best programs may mean for the young team's confidence. Continuing her youth movement, head coach Trish Knight often had three freshmen and two sophomores on the floor.
"I tell you, we have improved so much throughout the season, but it can be hard to get everyone to believe that when you're struggling in the win column," coach Knight said. "We put it all together in that first set--now, we just have to build from there."
Tech's next home match is Saturday, Nov. 14m when Oklahoma comes to the United Spirit Arena for an 11:45 a.m. start time. Please note the schedule change.
