Carvalho and Garcia Move on at ITA Regionals

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team had another successful day at the ITA Texas Regional Championships today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station. No. 25 Raony Carvalho advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw, while he and teammate Rafael Garcia moved on to the doubles semifinals.
David Gonzalez is still alive in consolation singles as well.
"We had a very good day today," said head coach Tim Siegel. "Everyone competed well, especially our doubles team for their first time playing together, and the opportunity they have to win the tournament."
In singles action, three Red Raiders won their round of 32 matches starting off with Gonzalo Escobar beating Sam Garforth-Bles (Rice), 6-0, 6-1. Garcia advanced by defeating Alberto Bautista (Texas A&M), 7-6 (3), 6-1, and Carvalho was victorious over teammate Raphael Pfister, 7-5, 6-2. However, Carvalho was the only Red Raider to win his round of 16 match, where he beat Daniel Whitehead (Texas), 6-4, 6-1.
In the consolation singles draw, Gonzalez defeated Max Stratmann (UTSA), 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 16 and then beat Craig Wiltz (Prairie View A&M), 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Wrapping up the day was No. 28 Carvalho and Garcia winning their round of 16 doubles match against Michael Nusslein and Christian Saravia (Rice), 8-3, and then beating Emmanuel Brighin and Slah Mbarek (TCU), 8-2, to advance to the semifinals.
Carvalho will face No. 30 Austin Krajicek (Texas A&M) at 9 a.m., while doubles action will begin at 1:30 p.m. for Carvalho and Garcia as they take on Alexey Grigorov and Marcus D. Lunt (Texas A&M).
