
Red Raiders Sweep Weekend Scrimmages

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball finished its weekend scrimmages with two wins on Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field. The Red Raiders defeated Midland College in game one, 7-6, before sliding by Lubbock Christian University, 3-1. With today's wins, the Red Raiders improved to 4-0 on the weekend to complete a sweep of the weekend set.
The Tech bats came alive in game one putting up seven runs on nine hits. Freshman Emily Bledsoe got things going with a triple in the second to bring home senior Elizabeth Eimen to make the score, 1-0. All things remained quiet until Midland College put up five runs in the fifth to take the lead, 5-1. The Red Raiders rallied in the sixth off a triple by Eimen which scored three runs and pulled the team within one. Tech would take the lead on a single by sophomore Tye Coats to score Eimen and freshman Ashley Hamada and made the score 6-5. Midland would tie the game in the seventh. The Red Raiders came up with the winning run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by senior Alex Watkins which scored classmate Megan Shupp and gave the Raiders the 7-6 win. Ashly Jacobs pitched four innings striking out four before being relieved by Coats.
Lubbock Christian took the early lead in game two going up 1-0 in the second. Tech responded in the second when Bledsoe doubled and scored courtesy of a single by Hamada. In the seventh the Raiders got on the board again when Eimen doubled to score freshmen Stephanie Drewry. Fellow freshman Skyler Peterson singled to bring home Eimen to make the score 3-1 and ensure the victory for the Red Raiders. Senior Alex Watkins pitched four innings and struck out three and was relieved by freshman Karli Merlich.
Fall games, which also include a tournament in the Houston area on Sept. 27 and 28, do not count as part of the NCAA schedule of events; therefore official stats were not kept. The complete schedule for 2009 has not yet been released but will be posted on www.texastech.com as soon as it is made available.
