LUBBOCK, Texas - After the Red Raiders defeated Oklahoma, 2-1, Sunday afternoon for their first Big 12 victory this season, Tech head coach Tom Stone sat down with texastech.com to discuss the match.
Texastech.com: How much did this win mean to the Red Raiders?
Coach Stone: "We knew this was a must-win game and that if we were going to compete in the Big 12, we would have to take points from Oklahoma. Thankfully, we did."
Texastech.com: When Tech went down 1-0, what were you thinking?
Coach Stone: "I was thinking we should not have let Tina (Rincon) take the kick from there and that we were going to have a heck of a battle from there on if we were going to win this."
Texastech.com: What was it like winning in overtime for the first time in your career at Tech?
Coach Stone:"Well overtime games, especially on Sundays, are all about heart and desire, and I think we showed plenty of that today. This win was there for the taking, but we had to close the deal. Taylor's ball and Brittney's finish was just what we needed."
TexasTech.com:Speaking of the overtime goal, you beat half of your team out onto the field to celebrate the win....
Coach Stone:"Yeah, well this was an intense and emotional game, and we are a young team trying to turn this program around, so every single point and win is huge for us. When the ball went in, the staff had no problem joining the team in the group mob in the box. I am pretty sure I pulled a hamstring, though. Every moment like that is so big for our program."
TexasTech.com:You've played a lot of freshman all year long and experienced some frustrating injuries. How has this roster evolved?
Coach Stone: "We have never complained or whined about the injuries. It's part of the game, and you have to deal with it. The freshmen have recently gone from surviving the college season to really contributing under pressure. When we scored today in ovetime we had five first-year players on the field. That says we believe they can get the job done."
