LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team was unable to overcome three Oklahoma State first-half goals Friday night as the No. 11 Cowgirls defeated the Red Raiders, 5-1, at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
With the loss, Tech drops to 5-3-1 overall on the season and 0-2-0 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma State remains perfect on the season, improving to 9-0-0 and 1-0-0 in conference.
The Cowgirls took the early lead in the 13th minute as the Red Raiders would get caught out of position, forcing a foul in the box. Annika Niemeier would convert the penalty kick for OSU for her second goal of the season.
Oklahoma State would make the score 2-0 in the 26th minute as Kyndall Treadwell would take a Bridget Miller pass and fire from 22-yards out for her seventh goal of the season. Kasey Langdon would add another Cowgirl goal four minutes later as OSU would lead 3-0 at the half.
"We had gotten the ball in some dangerous places, and Taylor (Lytle) had been wide open at the top of the box three times, so we were hopeful we could get back in it in the second half if we could keep getting her the ball," Tech head coach Tom Stone said.
The Red Raiders would get on the board in the 65th minute as Lytle would take a tapped pass from Kendyl Mygatt and angle a shot to the right post for her fourth goal of the season. Lytle led the Tech attack as she had five of the Red Raiders' seven shots on the night.
Tech appeared to add another goal shortly after from Maegan Wilber off a Sarabeth Clopton free kick, but the Red Raiders were called offsides, negating the goal.
Oklahoma State would add its fourth goal in the 71st minute later as Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon was unable to block a high Jamie Markaverich free kick from 25 yards out. Leah Hope would add OSU's final goal five minutes later off a pass from Treadwell.
"At 3-2, things would have gotten very interesting, but OSU is a very good team, and they turned the momentum back their way with their fourth goal," Stone said. "Oklahoma State is the best team we have played so far, and they are operating at a very high level. They deserved to win tonight, and they deserve their high ranking in the national polls."
Oklahoma State controlled the ball throughout the majority of the match, maintaining a 27-7 shot advantage and attempting seven corner kick to Tech's one.
The Red Raiders return home Sunday to face Oklahoma, who fell, 5-0, Friday to Colorado. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from the John Walker Soccer Complex.
