
Texas Tech Golf in Middle of Tight Field

LUBBOCK, Texas - Santiago Rivas carded an opening-round 72 to lead No. 17 Texas Tech on the first day of the 54-hole Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga. The Red Raiders are in 11th place after posting a 10-over 298 and are 11 shots off of the lead, but lead top-ranked Georgia, which is in a four-way tie for 12th.
Rivas is one shot out of the top 10 and four shots behind tournament leader Blayne Barber of Central Florida, who shot a 4-under 68 on the day. Garrett Merrell is two shots behind Rivas with a 74 and is tied in 29th place, while Will Griffin and Chris Ward each fired 76's and are tied in 50th place. Playing in his first collegiate tournament, redshirt freshman Brian Scherer is tied in 75th place after posting a 78.
No. 14 East Tennessee State leads the event with a 1-under 287, while Central Florida (289), No. 30 Mississippi (290), No. 7 Clemson (291) and No. 12 Tennessee-Chattanooga (291) comprise the top five. No. 13 South Carolina (294) and No. 22 Tennessee (294) are tied in sixth place followed by No. 20 Alabama (295) in eighth and No. 15 Wake Forest (296) and Auburn (296) tied in ninth. No. 1 Georgia (299) follows the Red Raiders in 12th as do No. 28 Mississippi State (299), No. 10 Georgia Tech (299) and No. 24 UAB (299). No. 26 North Carolina (300), No. 6 Florida (304) and Georgia State (308) round out the field.
