LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will finish the track season at the NCAA Championships, as 18 student-athletes will be competing. The event will be held at Drake University in Des Moines from June 11-14th.
The fifth ranked Lady Raiders will have seven student-athletes competing in nine events.
Six-time NCAA champion Sally Kipyego will be competing in two events again. Unlike last year when she ran the 5,000M and 10,000M, Kipyego will be running the 1,500M and 5,000M. Kipyego has the fastest time in the 5,000M with a time of 15:11.88 and the second-fastest time in the 1,500M with a time of 4:11.79.
Patience Knight is the other Lady Raider that will be competing in two events. Knight goes in with the third-best throw in the shot put and the 20th best in the discus.
All-American D'Andra Carter has the best throw in the discus and is looking for her second All-American honor of her career.
Senior Irene Kimaiyo is the other returning All-American returning to the NCAA Championships. She has the second fastest time in the 3K steepechase. Ozie Okolie will be making her second straight appearance in the hammer throw. She has a season-best throw of 207'-3".
Two Lady Raiders will be making their debut at the NCAA Championships. Gladys Kipsang and Sandra Iwunze will be competing in the 800M and 400M hurdles respectively. Kipsang has a season best time of 2:06.27 in the 800M and Iwunze owns the school-record with a time of 57.25.
The men's team has 11 student-athletes making the trip with six going for the first time.
Senior Shawon Harris will be the only male competing in two events. He has the seventh fastest time in the 110M hurdles and runs a leg on the third ranked 4x400M relay with Rodney Harrison, Tim Foster and Gil Roberts.
Senior Bobby Evers and Anthony Flemmons will be making return trips to the NCAA Championship in the long jump and triple jump. Evers has a season-best mark of 25'-00.75" and Flemons best triple jump mark of the season is 52'-6.50".
Senior Mike Cast who has won the Midwest Regional and Big 12 Championships is making his first trip to the NCAA Championships in the javelin. He has the 11th best throw in the nation going into the event.
Other Red Raiders competing for the first time at the NCAA Championships will be Omo Osaghe (110M hurdles), Wouter LeRoux (400M hurdles), Gilbert Limo (3K Steeple), Gil Roberts (4x400M) and Harrison Benjamin (shot put).
