LUBBOCK, Texas - If Will Griffin's play at the Greater San Antonio Amateur Golf Championship this past weekend is any predictor of possible success for himself or the Texas Tech men's golf team this coming year, good things are in store for both parties. Griffin captured his second consecutive championship at the event Sunday, winning the title by eight strokes with a 12-under par 272.
The San Antonio (Alamo Heights HS) product's consistency over the four days of the tournament was practically unmatched. He recorded just three bogies over the 72 holes and seemed to get stronger as the event went on, carding three straight rounds in the 60s over the final 54 holes at the 7,150-yard Cedar Creek Golf Course.
After opening up play with an even-par 71, Griffin carded the second-lowest score of the event with a five-under par 66 for the second round. He continued his strong play from there, firing a three-under par 68 before wrapping up the event with a four-under par 67, including three birdies over his final 10 holes while icing the event with seven holes remaining.
Griffin was the Big 12's Golfer of the Month for October and recorded five top-20 finishes on the year, including winning the Shoal Creek Invitational in September. He enters his junior campaign for Tech this coming fall.
