Tech Tennis Earns Most Academic All-Big 12 Honorees

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced its selections today for the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team, which included 56 student-athletes. The Texas Tech men's squad led the league with five honorees, while the women's team tied with Colorado for a Big 12-high of five of its own.
Of the 14 first team recipients, Tech's Jay Wofford was one of six student-athletes who posted a 4.00 on the men's side. In addition to Wofford, Michael Breler and Bojan Szumanski were also named first team recipients for the second straight year, while Sinisa Markovic and Christian Rojmar rounded out the second team. This is the second straight year the men's program has led the conference for its successes in the classroom.
Among the 36 female student-athletes in this season's academic team, the Lady Raiders banked in a total of five players including two-time first team honorees Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift. Receiving their first conference honors are senior Brenna Jackson (first team), and sophomores Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter (second team).
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
