LUBBOCK, Texas - Amy Suiter, who was a catcher for Teresa Wilson at the University of Washington and is in her fourth season as an assistant coach at Texas Tech, will assume interim head coaching duties of the Red Raider program effective immediately as appointed by Gerald Myers, Texas Tech's Athletics Director.
The Teresa Wilson era will officially end Thursday as the four-year head coach of the softball team has accepted the position of pitching coach with the University of Arizona.
"Under Coach Wilson's guidance the Texas Tech softball team has moved forward: we have outstanding student-athletes who are committed to becoming great players and have already proven themselves in the classroom and in the community," Myers said. "Coach Wilson brought in two exceptional coaches in Amy and Dustin Suiter who have been here for the past three years working with these players. We feel very confident that the benchmark for success established by Teresa will be continued by Amy and her staff."
Amy and Dustin, who were married in August of 2007, owned a successful softball school in the Seattle-area before joining Wilson in Lubbock in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, respectively. Amy Suiter was a catcher from 2000-2003 at Washington before completing her degree and beginning her career as a pitching and hitting instructor in 2004.
Wilson, who finishes her career at Tech with an 89-123 record in four seasons, took over the reins of the program three weeks before the 2005 season. That team beat Cat Osterman and Texas in Austin in late April as a signal of the strides the program would make under Wilson's watch. In 2007 the team competed for the championship for the Big 12 tournament for the first time in the program's history. The 2008 team - after getting off to a disappointing start to the season - finished with the most home wins in the program's history and ranked sixth in the Big 12, its highest finish since 2001. Academically, the 2008 squad had six players that earned 3.5 grade point averages or better for the academic year 2007-08 and the team boasted a 3.226 GPA over that time.
"Coach Wilson brought an emphasis on national competition and on dedication to the process of winning at the highest level to our program," Myers added. "We have begun renovations on our facilities and plans for those are underway. We look forward to success under Coach Suiter."
