Women's Tennis Sends Three to ITA All-American

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team will send three athletes to represent the team at the 2007 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila. Pre-qualifying rounds begin Sat., Sept. 29, at the famous Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Competing in singles will be Tech's No. 1 player Samantha van der Drift, currently ranked 115th by the ITA/Fila preseason poll for the first time in her collegiate career, and senior No. 2 player Janet Durham. In the first round, van der Drift will face No. 86 Elizabeth Lumpkin from UCLA and Durham will take on No. 103 Maria Mizyuk from Nevada.
In doubles, Tech's undefeated duo of Durham and freshman Kelsy Garland will compete in their third tournament of the year. Winning both the Mean Green Invite and Scarborough Specialties Open, the pair will meet Cal Poly's Maria Malec and Shannon Brady in the first round of the qualifiers.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season. The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, the Nov. 1-4 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season. The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships date back to 1983 when Georgia's Lisa Spain won the inaugural title. The famous Riviera Tennis Club has played host to this event since 1988.
The Oct.4-7 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. From the pre-qualifying tournament this weekend, eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the Oct. 2-3 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw).
