LUBBOCK, Texas - Starting off the 2007-08 season on a positive note, the Texas Tech women's tennis team had an impressive showing at the 2007 Mean Green Invite hosted by the University of North Texas. Tech's newly formed duo of senior Janet Durham and freshman Coronado stand-out Kelsy Garland swept the doubles bracket, winning four-straight matches.
On the first day of competition, Durham and Garland defeated Abilene Christian's Meagan Brown and Sarah Drummond, 8-2, and SMU's Natalia Bubien and Claire Rietsch, default due to injury. Tech's team of Ingrid Ballus and Kerryn Potgieter also saw two wins the first day defeating Army and UNT, but suffered an 8-4 loss to Texas-Arlington's Monika Hadvigerova and Klara Jagosova in the quarterfinals.
On day two of the tournament, Durham and Garland continued to dominate defeating UNT's Catalina Cruz and Rachel Wilhelm 8-4. In the finals, the pair avenged a loss on behalf of their teammates, Ballus and Potgieter, as they moved in and took an 8-1 win over UTA's Hadvigerova and Jagosova.
In singles, the competition proved to be a bit tougher for the Raiders. Freshmen Kyla Coleman, Gozde Unkaya, Leah Roberts and Ingrid Ballus all suffered first round losses, while veterans Maria Andres, Durham, Potgieter, and Samantha van der Drift all fell in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Garland came up short against SMU's Natalia Bubien, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0, and Laura Ring was knocked off by Natalie Friend (ACU), 6-2, 6-3.
Simone Templeton made her debut as a Red Raider leading her team in the tournament in singles play. She advanced to the finals after defeating players from ACU, UNT and SFA, but was unable to hold off SMU's Pavi Francis, losing 6-3, 6-3.
Next up, the Lady Raiders will host their annual Scarborough Specialties Tournament beginning Fri., Sept. 21, at both the Municipal Tennis Center and Monterrey High School. For complete draws and results, visit www.texastech.com.
