LUBBOCK, Texas - Leading her team on and off the court, Samantha van der Drift was the only Lady Raider chosen to this year's All-Big 12 women's tennis team. Playing at No. 1 this season for Texas Tech, van der Drift ended her sophomore campaign with a 15-7 dual record, 24-14 overall.
"I feel really honored and I am really happy to make this year's team," said van der Drift. "Last season I started off a little shaky, but this year I was able to turn things around and really step up for my team. I'm really excited and proud of this award, and I look forward to next year as I think we will have a very strong team."
In addition to singles, she also moved into the No. 1 doubles spot earlier this season with teammate Janet Durham. The two led their team in doubles with a 12-6 record, 15-6 overall. Last season she began her collegiate career filling mostly the No. 4 and 5 positions for the Lady Raiders, ending her freshman year 16-18 in singles, 13-6 in doubles.
"She is very deserving of it, and I was glad to see her named to this year's first team," commented head coach Cari Groce. "She has done a great job and I'm excited to see what she will bring to our team over her next two years."
