KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After an extended rain delay, the Texas Tech tennis teams could not find momentum to push themselves past the Texas Longhorns at the 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships. The Lady Raiders fell 4-0 in the second round, while the men lost 4-2 in the first round of play.
After finishing up a close 4-3 loss to Oklahoma the night before, the men's tennis team had to turn around and face the No. 11 Texas Longhorns at noon the next day. The Red Raiders came out strong securing the doubles victory at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Texas immediately answered with a win at No. 4 singles, tying up the score at one all. The hard-hitting continued as the men went toe-to-toe with the Longhorns, being ahead on multiple courts before a rain delay was called.
After nearly a five hour delay, play resumed with Tech's Milos Kustudija giving his team their second point over Jon Wiegand at No. 6. In a series of close singles matches, the men could not quite find the extra momentum needed to pull ahead as Tech dropped their next three at No. 1, 3 and 2, advancing Texas into the next round of play. The Raider's No. 3 player Sinisa Markovic suffered his first loss after 12 straight wins to UT's Milan Mihailovic, 6-1, 7-6.
On the women's side of the court, the No. 37 ranked Lady Longhorns got the early advantage winning the doubles point. Tech's No. 2 duo of Brenna Jackson and Lakann Wagley were able to pull off Tech's only win of the day, 8-3 over UT's Courtney Zauft and Ristine Olson. Senior captain Wagley ends her reign with 80 career doubles victories, hailing her in the number one spot in Tech's record book over former partner Tara Browning with 78.
In singles, Texas continued to dominate as they won in three straight matches at No. 1, 2, and 3. The No. 1 player Samantha van der Drift fell 6-4, 6-2 to Vanja Corovic, with Corovic clinching the victory and advancing the Longhorns into the semi-finals.
Next up, the Red Raiders anticipate a bid as the NCAA will announce on Tuesday their selections for the 2007 NCAA Tennis Championships. For more information and complete results, visit www.texastech.com or www.big12sports.com.
