LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team secured a seventh seed in the 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships after winning the doubles point over Nebraska in yesterday's make-up match in Kansas City, Mo. Tech improves their record to 12-10 overall as they next face the No. 2 seed Texas Fri., April 27, at 3 p.m.
Against the Huskers, Tech avenged last season's first-round tournament loss by sweeping in and taking the doubles point that was left undecided due to poor weather conditions earlier this season. Lady Raiders Brenna Jackson and senior Lakann Wagley notched in the first win 8-4 playing at No. 2. They were followed by the freshmen duo of Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter, who broke their four match slump by clinching the match 4-3 for their team, winning 8-2.
With the seventh seed in this year's conference championships, Tech first faced the Kansas State Wildcats. Although only a 10th seed, K-State came in boasting a 5-2 win during the regular season over the Raiders in Manhattan, Kan.
The Lady Raiders refused to have a repeat as they entered doubles with the momentum of their pre-tournament warm-up against the Huskers the night before. The No. 2 and 3 doubles got it done again for TTU, as KSU defaulted at No. 3 followed by Jackson and Wagley sneaking by 9-7 at No. 2.
In singles, Tech came in and dominated in three straight singles matches. Jackson won by default at No. 6, as Andres knocked off KSU's Olga Klimova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. Playing in the No. 1 spot, sophomore Samantha van der Drift moved in to clinch the match for her team winning 6-2, 7-6 over Wildcat Viviana Yrureta.
The Longhorns have won all 32 matches over the Lady Raiders, as they walked away from Lubbock earlier this season with a 6-1 victory. Junior Janet Durham was the lone player able to put her team on the board with a third set tie-breaker victory, 11-9, over Stephanie Davison.
