LUBBOCK, Texas - With the regular season nearly wrapped up, the Texas Tech women's tennis team hits the road for the Big 12 Tournament. Currently sitting 10-10 overall, 3-7 in Big 12, the Lady Raiders first will play a doubles match against Nebraska today in Kansas City, Mo.
Leading in the No. 1 doubles spot for Tech is junior Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift who sit 15-5 in dual matches, 6-4 in Big 12. They will face Nebraska's Imke Reimers and Diana Kuhl, who hold a 9-3 overall record. At No. 2 senior Lakann Wagley and Brenna Jackson (7-5) will take on NU's Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting (8-4). Playing No. 3 will be freshmen Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter facing Huskers' Marianne Cicmanec and Ashley Finnegan.
When the Huskers came to Lubbock in March the match was postponed due to poor weather conditions, ending it in a 3-3 split in singles. A win will tie Tech with Nebraska at No. 7 in conference regular play with a 4-7 record, and will possibly give them the upper hand they need to move into the No. 7 seed in the tournament.
Only the top five conference rankings have been decided for the women, as No. 14 Baylor clinched the regular season title going 19-6 overall, 10-1 in Big 12. Next follows No. 41 Texas who also went 10-1 in conference, but rounded out the second seed with a 13-8 overall record. Rounding off the next three seeds are No. 21 Texas A&M, No. 35 Colorado and No. 69 Oklahoma State.
The 2007 Big 12 Tennis Championships will be held for the third time in conference history at the Plaza Tennis Courts in Kansas City, Mo. Last season Tech suffered a first-round loss to the Huskers, falling 4-0. Live updates and results will be available at http://kuathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-tennis/spec-rel/032707aaq.html.
