LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced today the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis teams. Among 63 student-athletes honored, Texas Tech placed eight men's and women's players to this year's list.
Leading the Big 12 on the men's side, Tech boasted five student-athletes to Academic All-Big 12 status. Sophomore Michael Breler, senior Dimitrio Martinez and junior Bojan Szumanski were all named to the first team, while sophomores Sinisa Markovic and Christian Rojmar made second team.
This is Szumanski's second Academic Big 12 honor, being named first team in 2005, as well as Martinez who was the lone Red Raider to be honored last season after making the second team. The honor may not come as a surprise to some as the men's team has maintained a 3.00 GPA or higher since the fall of 1999.
On the women's side sophomore Samantha van der Drift was the only Lady Raider named to the first team, as senior Lakann Wagley and junior Janet Durham both received second team honors. Nearing the end of her tenure at Tech, this was Wagley's third second team honor.
The men's academic squad consisted of 16 first team members and three on the second team, while the women had 32 first team recipients and 12 second team. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
The Big 12 Championships are set to begin on Thurs., April 26, in Kansas City, Mo. For more information and the complete Big 12 release, visit www.big12sports.com.
