LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team was swept by two Big 12 powerhouses this weekend on the road, falling 7-0 to No. 20 Texas A&M and No. 15 Baylor. The Red Raiders return to the McLeod Tennis Center for their last match of the regular season on April 22, hosting Iowa State.
Tech's doubles play struggled to find some breathing room this weekend as they were dominated in all six matches. Tech's No. 1 duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift fell to 11-5, 5-4 in conference, losing both matches to ranked opponents.
Singles continued to be just as tough as both the Aggies and the Bears boast ranked singles competitors. At No. 1 van der Drift fell 6-3, 6-2, to A&M's No. 17 Anna Lubinsky, and 6-1, 7-5, to BU's Zuzana Zemenova. The Tech sophomore currently holds a 13-4 overall record, 5-5 in Big 12, and is 0-5 against ranked opponents.
The Aggies' Lubinsky improved to 6-0 in Big 12 singles, as well as teammates Nicki Mechem and Tiffany Clifford remaining undefeated with wins over the Raider's Maria Jose Andres and Brenna Jackson. A&M's win advances them in the series over the Red Raiders 27-2.
At No. 2 for Baylor, No. 54 Zuzana Cerna beat TTU's Lakann Wagley 6-1, 6-0, improving her Big 12 singles record to 5-0. Wagley falls to 10-9, 4-6 in conference. The Bear's No. 77 Lenka Broosova is now 6-0 defeating Durham in two quick sets at No. 3, putting Durham at 12-8 overall, 2-5 in Big 12.
Wrapping up the 2007, Tech currently sits 9-10 overall, 2-7 in conference. The team looks to end the regular season with a win against the Iowa State Cyclones, as the Red Raiders enter the match ahead 12-0 in the series.
Wagley will play in her last home match at the McLeod Tennis Center against Iowa State on Sun., April 22, at 10 a.m. For more information and complete results, visit www.texastech.com.
