Women's Tennis Face Two Top 20 Big 12 Opponents

LUBBOCK, Texas - Looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Kansas State last weekend, the Texas Tech women's tennis team returns to the road in two of their toughest matches this season. The team travels to face No. 20 Texas A&M on Sat., April 14, at noon, then No. 15 Baylor on Sun., April 15, at 2 p.m.
Last time out the Lady Raiders traveled to Manhattan, Kan., to face the Wildcats. K-State won the doubles point at No. 2 and 3 to give them the early 1-0 lead. Tech sophomore Samantha van der Drift was the first to notch in a win for her team. Unfortunately, KSU followed up with three straight singles wins, clinching the match in their favor. Freshman Maria Jose Andres was the only other Lady Raider able to sink in a victory playing in the No. 5 spot.
Leading the team in the No. 1 singles position is van der Drift who holds a 13-4 duals record, 5-3 in Big 12. She also pairs in doubles in the No. 1 spot with teammate Janet Durham. The duo currently sit 11-3 overall, 5-2 in conference. The Lady Raiders look to improve their 9-8, 2-5, record as head towards the end of their regular season.
Entering Saturday's match, A&M dominates the series 26-2 over the Raiders, boasting a 7-0 win last season in Lubbock. Leading in the No. 1 spot for the Aggies is Anna Lubinsky who leads the conference with her 5-0 singles record. In addition, Nicki Mechem and Tiffany Clifford sit undefeated in Big 12 playing in the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
The No. 15 Baylor Bears lead the Big 12 with a 8-1 record, 16-6 overall, after defeating A&M on Tues., April 10, 6-1 in College Station. The Bears lead the series over the Raiders 14-10, coming off a 6-1 win last season. At No. 2 Zuzana Cerna sits 4-0 in Big 12, followed by teammate Lenka Brousova holding a 6-0 record at No. 3.
