LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball begins its last month of Big 12 play Saturday afternoon in Boulder, Colo. when it takes on the Colorado Buffaloes in a 12 p.m. matinee. The Red Raiders are looking to complete the season sweep of the Buffs after winning the first contest between the two earlier in the season.
Both squads enter the contest coming off tough losses. Tech (7-16, 1-13) is coming off a tough setback to No. 12 Kansas State Wednesday, while Colorado (5-17, 0-14) suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. The Buffs will be looking for their first win in conference play Saturday.
The first time the two foes met back on Sept. 12, Tech edged past CU 3-2 (30-19, 30-24, 24-30, 27-30 and 15-12) in a hard-fought battle. After the Red Raiders took the first two games, the Buffs stormed back to win games three and four. They held the lead midway through game five until Tech stormed back with a late rally to claim the victory. Four Red Raiders recorded double-doubles in that contest, including Amy Gandy, Emily Ziegler, Alicia Ostmeyer and Brandi Hood. Ostmeyer and Hood each recorded 10 blocks that night.
Tech coach Nancy Todd will look for a strong outing from senior Amy Gandy to help lead the Red Raiders Saturday. Gandy is coming off one of the best weeks of her career last week, in which she averaged five kills, one block and nearly two digs per game. She led the team with a team-best 10 kills against the Wildcats Wednesday. Fellow seniors Lindsey Louis and Alicia Ostmeyer will also be counted on for big outings against the Buffs.
CU enters Saturday having played seven five-game matches in conference play this year. The Buffs have had both No. 12 KSU and No. 18 Oklahoma on the verge of defeat before falling late. They are coached by Pi'i Aiu in his 11th season at the helm of the program. CU is led individually by junior Alex Buth with 3.17 kills per game and sophomore Mallori Gibson at 3.15 kpg.
First serve is set for 12 p.m. MST in the Coors Events Center.
