LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite out-shooting the No. 6 team in the land, the Texas Tech soccer team lost to Missouri, 2-0, Friday night at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
The Tigers got on the board in the 20th minute when Michelle Collins found the opposite side of the net off a Mo Redmond pass. The goal was the first against the Red Raiders in the first half since playing TCU Sept. 14.
In the 69th minute, Missouri's Alysha Bonnick tapped in a loose ball making the score 2-0. Janelle Cordia was credited with the assist on the play.
The Red Raiders had a scoring opportunity in the 72nd minute on a Priscilla Esquivel penalty kick, but Missouri goalkeeper Malory Forst made the save, and Megan Hoffert's rebound attempt went wide right.
"I think out-shooting a top team like Missouri shows our girls that we are getting offensive chances, but we just need to turn them into points," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "We left a few scoring opportunities out there, and that's something we have to work on. I was proud of our effort, though, and we gave ourselves an opportunity against a quality team."
Despite the two goals, it was still a career night for junior goalkeeper Tina Rincon as she had ten saves with seven being in the second half. The last player to have at least ten was Megan Knauss also against Missouri in 2005.
Sophomore Brittney Harrison and Esquivel led the Red Raider attack with three shots each. Harrison, normally a defender, had all her shots on goal.
With the loss, the Red Raiders drop to 3-5-1 on the year and 1-2 in the Big 12. Colorado improves to 9-2 and 3-0 in conference. Statistically, Tech out-shot Missouri, 21-20, and out-numbered the Tigers in corner kicks, 8-3.
The Red Raiders close the weekend Sunday against Kansas at R.P. Fuller Stadium. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, and the first 150 fans will receive a free sandwich courtesy of Schlotzsky's.
