Slow Starts Doom Tech Against Aggies

LUBBOCK, Texas - LUBBOCK, Texas - Slow starts in each game proved costly for Texas Tech in a 3-0 (21-30, 25-30 and 14-30) defeat at the hands of in-state foe Texas A&M Saturday night in the United Spirit Arena. With the win, the Aggies claimed the season series between the two schools.
Tech dropped to 7-13 and 1-10, while streaking A&M improved to 16-6, 5-6 on the season. The Aggies out hit Tech .336 to .123 to win their third straight match.
"The girls played with a lot of intensity," Tech assistant coach Mike Moffitt said. "We just got off to slow starts and that hurt us."
Michelle Flores knocked down 10 kills on the evening to lead the Red Raiders. Brandi Hood added nine kills to go along with three blocks. Jenn Harrell led the Tech defense with 15 digs, while Amy Gandy added six kills and a pair of service aces to go with her five digs.
The Aggies were the aggressors in the first game and took advantage of a sluggish Red Raider start to go on a big10-0 run to take control of the first game. Tech fought back late with a 5-1 run to pull within 26-21 after a kill from Becca Baldwin. It would not be enough as A&M responded with the last four points to claim the win at 30-21.
The Red Raiders took a quick 2-1 advantage after a kill from Lindsey Louis at the outset of game two. They went cold after that and the Aggies took advantage to take a 10-4 lead. Tech would battle back and stay within striking distance the rest of the way. An Aggie attack error late cut the deficit to 27-25. Once again A&M responded and took the game 30-25.
It was all Aggies at the beginning of game three. A&M took advantage of some early Red Raider miscues to race out to a 12-4 advantage. The Aggies defense stepped up and thwarted any Tech runs to eventually build a 13 point cushion. They went on to finish the match with the 30-14 win.
A&M was led by three players with double-digit kills. Sarah Ammerman led the way with a match-best 16 kills on .387 hitting, while Kelsey Bryant and Kelly Stanton chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.
The Red Raiders will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when they travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CST.
