LUBBOCK, Texas - In an initiative to extend their leadership and support to the community, the Texas Tech women's tennis team and head Coach Cari Groce will inaugurate the Game, Set, Match Reading Program. The program is designed to promote excellence in the classroom, as well as character-building through the competition of sports.
The program kicks off this week at Iles Elementary, who was one of six elementary schools in the Lubbock Independent School District to be awarded exemplary status by the Texas Education Agency. The team held a celebration last week to honor Iles at the Booker T. Washington park with a barbeque, and held a USTA tennis clinic on the tennis court they had redone over the summer for the local neighborhood.
"It's a great opportunity," said Groce. "I'm very happy to be able to kick off another season of tennis clinics and the new reading club. It is a great honor for Iles, as we have been holding tennis clinics with their students and faculty, and want to congratulate them on their success."
The USTA/ITA awarded Groce a grant to help fund her initiative, and to promote their "Tennis on Campus" programs. Nearly $19,000 in funding by the USTA will be provided to its' ITA-member schools this fall, and a total of 21 programs are projected to work with over 1,000 participants.
