Texas Tech Tennis Receives Intercollegiate Tennis Association Honors

LUBBOCK, Texas - At the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, women's tennis had three in the top five of the finals list in the southwest division. Senior Lakann Wagley finished second behind Ohio State's Julie Voss. Junior Janet Durham captured third and sophomore Sophie-Anne Fankham tied for fifth with Sarah Lancaster and SMU's Kristen Reid.
The ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit presented by the USTA was played at 23 regional sites throughout the country during the month of July. Over 20,000 men and women have competed in circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit was started by Indiana head women's tennis coach Lin Loring and provides college tennis players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. It is made up of six regional circuits (East, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Southwest and West) and each region consists of four consecutive tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the ITA National Summer Championships in August. Players accumulate points based on their performance and advancement in a given tournament.
The ITA also named Katja Kovacic, Cigdem Duru and Samantha van der Drift to the 2006 ITA Division I Scholar-Athletes List. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
