
Brownsville Native Signs NLI

LUBBOCK, Texas - Brownsville, Texas, native Chuck Zavala has signed a national letter of intent (NLI), as announced by Texas Tech track and field. Zavala will join the Red Raiders as a decathlete and becomes the 20th member of the 2006 signing class.
Zavala comes from Brownsville's St. Joseph Academy High School, where he was coached by Meme Garza. At the 2006 TAPPS State Championships, he took the title in two events and finished as runner-up in one. Zavala threw a distance of 141'-8" in the discus and cleared a height of 6'-2" in the high jump to win both events. He also had a distance of 21'-10.25" to finish second in the long jump.
Zavala has a personal best of 6'-5" in the high jump, 22' in the long jump and 148'-10" in the discus.
