RED RAIDERS CONCLUDE REGULAR-SEASON AT OKLAHOMA STATE
Texas Tech begins play in the 2006 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship on Wednesday afternoon as the Red Raiders will face off against Big 12 Regular-Season Champion Texas. The Red Raiders are the eighth seed for the second consecutive year in the Big 12 Championship and face the top-seeded Longhorns at 1 p.m. The Red Raiders will face fourth-seeded Nebraska at 8 p.m. on Thursday and fifth seed Baylor at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Should Texas Tech win its pool, the Red Raiders will play in the Big 12 Championship game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Red Raiders come into the tournament after being swept over the weekend at No. 13 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys earned the first ever sweep (by either school) in the all-time series at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium and clinched second place in the Big 12 final regular-season standings. Tech's half of the bracket all faced similar misfortunes over the weekend as Texas was swept by Missouri, Nebraska lost 2-of-3 at home against Oklahoma and Baylor was swept on the road at Kansas State.
Texas Tech is 31-23-1 overall and finished the Big 12 with a 9-16-1 record. The Red Raiders are the eighth seed for the second straight year and will also be looking to pull the upset in the first round for the second straight season. Last year, the Red Raiders became the fourth No. 8 seed in Big 12 Tournament history to upset the No. 1 seed in the first round, as Tech handed No. 4 Nebraska a 5-3 loss.
All of Texas Tech's games in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship will be carried live on the Texas Tech Sports Network with Mark Finkner calling the action from AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Saturday's game against Baylor will be televised nationally by FSN with Greg Lucas and Jack Lazorko calling the action. Advance tickets for the championship are available by calling the Oklahoma City All-Sports Association at (405) 236-5000.
