LUBBOCK, Texas - After starting the 2006 campaign in February with a seven weekend road trip and navigating through the grind of a challenging non-conference schedule and a always difficult Big 12 slate, the Texas Tech softball team will close out the regular season this weekend when they travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on the Missouri. Both teams enter the weekend series with hopes of improving their seeding for the upcoming Big 12 Championship, which will be held in Oklahoma City, Okla., from May 8-14.
The Tigers and Red Raiders met earlier this season at a early-season tournament in Tucson, Ariz., with Texas Tech emerging with a 8-3 victory.
On Wednesday, the Red Raiders split a doubleheader with UTSA in the final home series of the season, taking the nightcap by a score of 4-1 to snap an eight-game skid and halt a 14-game winning streak by the Roadrunners.
Sophomores Jennifer Corkin and Whitney Riley have been hot at the plate for Tech. Corkin, a second-year first baseman/catcher from Avondale, Ariz., enters the weekend second on the team in hitting with a .297 average this season and has hit safely in 14 of her last 16 games. Riley, who earlier this season compiled a 10-game hitting streak, is showing signs of that success at the plate as she has collected base hits in four of her last nine trips to the plate.
In the circle, sophomore Sarah Losleben has been turned in a string of impressive outings, including her last appearances when she tossed her second complete game of the season to pick up the win against UTSA. In the contest, the Snoqualmlie, Wash., native recorded a team-high 10 strikeouts.
The Tigers, meanwhile, are also slumping coming into the series having dropped six of their last seven contests to leave them with a 21-23 overall record this season and a 5-9 mark in the Big 12 standings.
