IRVING, Texas - True freshman Will Griffin was named the men's Big 12 Golfer of the Month for his play in October, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. The honor marks only the second time a Red Raider has been given the award since its establishment in 2002.
Griffin finished in a tie for second at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Oct. 10th after carding rounds of 68-62-71--201. The scores marked career 18-, 36- and 54-hole lows for the San Antonio, Texas, native. His second round of 9-under 62 broke the previous school record of 64. His 54-hole score of 12-under 201 broke the Tech record by one shot. Griffin's efforts led to the team's best finish of the year, second place, with scores of 274-272-280--826 (-26).
The round of 62 ties the lowest of any round at a Big 12 school. Kansas State's Don Bishop fired a 62 at a 1948 Kansas Dual and Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan fired 62 at the 2002 U.S. Collegiate.
Griffin and his Tech teammates get the spring underway on February 8th as they travel to Waikoloa, Hawaii, for the UH-Hilo Intercollegiate. For complete coverage, please visit www.texastech.com.
