LUBBOCK, Texas - The United States Tennis Association and ITA released the section and national winners for the 2006 USTA/ITA Community Service Award. Lady Raider tennis head Coach Cari Groce was named the winner of the Texas section.
The USTA/ITA Community Service Award honors ITA coaches for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs through community centers, schools, parks, in community tennis associations, inner city, suburban or rural programs. The award program began in 2003, and was open to over 2,000 ITA head and assistant coaches at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College levels.
''I'll graciously accept the award on behalf of my team,'' commented Groce. ''My assistant coaches and team play a key role in all the community service projects we do. The team really looks forward to these events and loves giving back to the community. I think these experiences build character and are a great starting point for the personal growth of these ladies, and hopefully it will continue for the rest of their lives.''
In addition to Groce twenty-one other coaches were also announced as section level winners, including Wichita State's Chris Young being named this year's national winner. All sectional and national winners will be honored on December 15 at the ITA Coaches Convention at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, during the ITA membership and awards banquet.
