LUBBOCK, Texas - The only Big 12 teams with identical records will faceoff on Saturday when the Red Raiders travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face the Kansas Jayhawks. Each team will enter the match with an overall record of 10-11 and a 3-9 record in conference play. Both squads are coming off of 3-1 losses against ranked Big 12 teams, with Tech losing to No. 8 Texas and KU falling to No. 20 Oklahoma.
On Wednesday, the Red Raiders played host to the Longhorns. Both teams displayed low hitting percentages with Tech averaging .082 and Texas not faring much better with .195. The Red and Black brought the crowd into the match by capturing the first game with a score of 31-29 after rallying back from a 29-26 deficit. The Red Raiders struggled beyond the first game, as they fell in the next three to lose to the Longhorns.
The Jayhawks hosted the Sooners on Wednesday's Big 12 match-up. Kansas fell early in the match as they dropped the first two games 30-23 and 30-19. Battling against a sweep, Kansas fought to capture the third game 30-27 on .174 hitting. The third-game victory didn't secure enough momentum going into the fourth frame as the Sooners held on to take the match with a 30-25 game four.
Texas Tech and Kansas' first contest against each other was the fifth conference match for both of the schools. Tech entered looking for their first Big 12 win, while Kansas captured the match against Texas A&M one week earlier. Tech jumped to the early lead after winning games one and two by scores of 30-26 and 30-25. The Jayhawks cruised to an easy victory in the third frame by winning 30-22. Tech was determined to win their first Big 12 contest though as they won the fourth frame 30-25.
The Kansas match featured Tech's best hitting of conference season, as the Red and Black hit .236 percent with 56 kills and 21 errors on 148 total attempts. Amy Charlebois notched 13 kills with two errors on 24 attempts to hit .458. Philister Sang added 11 kills with 10 digs to tally a double-double.
Kansas ended the match with three Jayhawks recording double-digit kills, as Jana Correa led with 21. Correa also led in digs as she notched 15 to earn a double-double. The Jayhawk squad finished the match with .156 team hitting. KU recorded a total of 60 kills with 34 errors on 167 total attempts.
The match between the Red Raiders and Jayhawks is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday from the Horejsi Family Center in Lawrence. Gametracker may be accessed through the Texas Tech athletics site, www.texastech.com, as the match is in progress. Results will be posted on the website as soon as they become available.
